2012 Lancaster Rally Kick-Off Meeting

Monday, January 30, 6:30 – 8:30 at REI (I635 just west of Welch)

It's Rally Time!

With the GDB Lancaster Rally rapidly approaching, it's time to step up, volunteer and have some fun making this year's Rally a success. Our first planning meeting will be January 30th at REI. This meeting is for Captains, volunteers and any other interested parties. This will be a short meeting with the goal to organize teams and support crews, discuss suggestions for improvements and establish a pre-Rally timeline.

This is our major fundraiser for the year and supports our yearly operations and charitable giving, so now's the time to give back to the Club and volunteer. There are lots of opportunities for help available; the Captains of each crew will be posting a signup sheet on the forum to help fill all positions.

Stay tuned for more information after our January meeting.

Glass Blowing at the Cliff House

Come join us as we return to the Cliff House Studio where artists Raymond Rains and Pamela Summers live and work. We're invited to watch as Raymond demonstrates glassblowing inside his warm and cozy studio at Eagle Mountain Lake.

PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE IN THE RIDE START LOCATION

Due to concerns about towing at Montgomery Plaza, we have secured the permission of the First United Methodist Church in downtown Fort Worth to park in one of their lots for this Saturday's ride. There is a Buon Giorno Coffee shop and a Walgreens just south of this parking lot for anyone who requires caffeine and/or restrooms prior to the ride. The lot we have permission to use is bordered by Henderson Street on the west and Macon Street on the east. The north boundary is West 5th Street and the south is West 7th Street. This lot is just south of the church (which is distinguished by its two spires). There is a statue of Jesus in the center of the lot. The lot can be entered on either West 5th Street or West 7th Street. Both streets allow 2-way traffic at this location.

We'll leave the First United Methodist Church parking lot on West 5th/7th Street in Fort Worth and ride to the Cliff House on a 40-50 mile route. There will be refreshments at the studio for the riders and stunning views of downtown Fort Worth. We'll even be able to see where our ride started, 13 miles distant (as the crow flies). After the demonstration we'll wind our way back to our starting point through neighborhoods both new and old. The Ride Leader is Richard Wilks 817-371-2230

Super Bowl Sunday, February 5th

Join GDB as we host our 27th Annual Super Bowl Sunday ride to the West End. This year our host location will again be Dick's Last Resort. Depending on the weather and rider turnout, Dick's could be a tad crowded and is first come first served. There is a list of area restaurants for alternatives to Dick's (you should call them to confirm that they will be open).

Thirteen different ride locations will be taking part in this annual tradition. This is a lively location so bring the smiles, cheers and laughter as you see your friends, meet new ones from the metroplex and have lunch together. If the crowd is too much and there is no seating at Dick's, you've got alternatives! Wear your club or cycling shop jersey and throw in the bike lock for security while eating. We look forward to seeing everyone on February 5th. Click here for detailed information.

Please contact Princess at princesscapers@tx.rr.com if you have any questions. See you on the road!

A Note About Membership

With tough economic times right now, many of our friends and riders have allowed their memberships to expire without renewal.

The Greater Dallas Bicyclists (GDB) Board of Directors want to emphasize the value and importance of a current membership in GDB. Membership is $20 a year or $36 for two years. When one considers staying current on the forum to keep up with ride changes and impromptu gatherings, two annual picnics and a holiday party, our hosting the annual Super Bowl Sunday ride to the West End for riders of all the area clubs, and our major event of the year, the annual Lancaster Country Ride -- the value of a $20 membership is clear.

Why is membership important? As hard as we work at safety and remaining vigilant for hazards, we still need all riders to have signed a waiver before riding in our group rides or attending our events.

How is that done? Are there folks walking around with clipboards and waiver forms? Do we sort, file and store these forms? No, it’s done in the membership sign-up process. Without the waivers, we could not function as a club.

If you’ve been thinking of joining or if your membership has lapsed and you’ve been putting off renewal, or you know someone who has, do us all the favor of renewing today. Just click on the JOIN GDB link above and join or renew today.

GDB Gives Back to Lancaster

Mike Eipper and Brenda Barnell deliver checks to Director Ronnie Lowe of the Lancaster Outreach Center and to Pastor Charles Dixon of the First Baptist Church. One thing that makes GDBers proud is knowing their volunteer efforts have provided help for charities and organizations in the local communities.

GDB Ride Rules Reminder

-No earbuds or headphones (music or phone) and no boom boxes (but bring all the conversation you want!)

-No use of cellphones while riding (please pull off and stop to take or make a call)

-Use common sense if you have aerobars - please don't use them while in tight formations on group rides
